As a birdwatcher I had a particular fondness for Ransome’s books that focus on birds including Great Northern and this great read, Coot Club. In the books, it's fascinating how quickly a child on a bicycle can shortcut a winding river journey: Time flows differently on water, on shore.

And Tom, walking up and down with his father in the darkening garden, and already feeling a good deal better, poured out the whole story. We would tack our imaginary boats across the Lake (the playground) and camp on Wild Cat Island (a mound at one end of the playground with two large elm trees on it). To an American who's never crossed an ocean, the shots of the narrow rivers and wide waters, the tidal play, bridges, and shallows, the boats and barges, make up for a great deal.

You can easily top up your water tank at all boatyards, yacht stations, and public moorings, usually at a small cost.

Each Boathouse has a spacious and airy open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen with a fireplace and bedrooms leading off this space. Listen out for the ship’s bell an hour before sunset, when drinks are served at the Clubhouse and menus of the day are shared. Forward vision is very good from these craft, which usually feature a single level deck which many parties find more convenient and easy.The author’s illustrations and maps are a nice addition, but the maps are hard to read in the ebook version. I don’t know who is in the rest of the books in the second half of the series, but after finishing Coot Club, I know I wouldn’t mind running into any of its characters again. There is satisfactory realism about all that happens to the Coot Club, and the atmosphere and detail of the odd part of England where they navigate are conveyed with a charm and accuracy that only this author perhaps could bring to bear. A couple of children are asked to spend the last days of their holiday with an older friend of their mothers who has rented a sailboat. Tucked into the fynbos along the lagoon shore with stunning views of the mountains beyond, the Boathouses blend into their surroundings and have been built within the strict guidelines of the local area.
