“When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I’d like to know them.”

Several Vanity Fair covers have featured Leibovitz's stunning—and often controversial—portraits of celebrities. Demi Moore, pregnant and nude, followed by a body painting shoot, Whoopi Goldberg in a bathtub of milk, and Sylvester Stallone appearing nude in a pose inspired by Rodin's "The Thinker" are among the most remembered celebs to grace the cover. Known for her ability to make her sitters become physically involved in her work, another of Leibovitz's most famous portraits is of the late artist Keith Haring, who painted himself like a canvas for the photo. Leibovitz’s first camera was a Minolta SRT-101, which she replaced in the early ’70s with a Nikon F. On her early assignments she would carry three camera bodies along with the following lenses: 35mm, 55mm and 105mm. The family splits their time between New York (where Massenet now runs the Imaginary Ventures fund she co-founded in 2018, which does early-stage investing in businesses such as Skims, Westman Atelier and Mejuri), East Hampton and an 18th-century manor house in Wiltshire, England. BBC sorry for misrepresenting Queen". ABC News. Reuters. July 12, 2007. Archived from the original on July 18, 2007 . Retrieved July 19, 2007. Working on assignment for Rolling Stone with the legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson, Leibovitz captured the moment when, after resigning as president, Nixon left the White House for the last time. Three stooped guards in the foreground of the image roll up the carpet, fighting against the wind from the whirling blades as Nixon's helicopter hovers behind them. The magazine intended to publish the image alongside Thompson's piece but when he failed to submit, the editor published Leibovitz's images alone. The expressive photos captured an extraordinary, and highly-documented event in American history in a novel way. Here Leibovitz brilliantly highlights that the relevance of a work of art is not in what it reveals about the subject, but in what it shows about the cultural moment in which it was created. Everyone in the Photography field knows the name - Annie Leibovitz. Any list of famous photographers wouldn't be complete without mentioning Annie Leibovitz. I admire the work of photographers like Beaton, Penn, and Avedon, as much as I respected grittier photographers such as Robert Frank. But in the same way that I’d had to find my own way of reportage, I had to find my own form of glamour. Annie Leibovitz

I was a young and unformed person and I was impatient. Photography seemed like a faster medium than painting. Painting was isolating. Photography took me outside and helped socialize me. I felt at homes in the rooms where the photography students worked. There was a lot of angry abstract expressionists in the painting studios. I wasn’t ready for abstraction. I wanted reality.
