And none of that stuff made me weepy or sentimental when it happened to me, but you bet I'll be thinking like this when my daughter hits that age. Intriguing. Surely guides readers through the bumpy landscape of strongly delineated characters dealing with the most difficult issue that faces all of us. Provides much to think about and discuss.”— Starred, School Library Journal Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson What Are We Writing About When We Write About Ghosts? 2 hours ago I turned sixteen in January." Thandi looks into Liz's bunk. "Liz," she says, turning the one syllable of Liz's name into a slightly southern two, Li-iz, "you mind if I ask you a personal question?" And there will be other lives for unpaid debts, for one-night stands, for Prague and Paris, for painful shoes with pointy toes, for indecision and revisions.

Gabrielle Zevin Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

It’s hard for me to write a review about Elsewhere without any spoil or philosophy of life. So, please bear with me.

Funny and pensive, happy and heartbreaking. Readers from a broad range of beliefs will find this a quirky and touching exploration of the Great Beyond.”— The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

Elsewhere (Zevin novel) - Wikipedia

The girl yawns and rubs the sleep out of her eyes. She glances from Liz to the ceiling to the floor to the window and then to Liz again. She touches her braids and sighs. "On a boat," she answers, stifling another yawn. But I believe good things happen everyday. I believe good things happen even when bad things happen. And I believe on a happy day like today, we can still feel a little sad. And that's life, isn't it?” olethros6 on The Secret of the Sul’Dam: Subtle Changes to the Way the One Power Works in The Wheel of Time TV Series 40 mins agoIt did at first; it hurt like hell, but not anymore." Thandi lowers her hair. "I think it's getting better actually." A work of powerful beauty. This inventive novel slices right to the bone of human yearning, offering up an indelible vision of life and death as equally rich sides of the same coin.”— Starred, Booklist

My one peeve is the clumsy use of present tense structure. It may be just me, let me rephrase that... it probably isn't clumsy, but it distracted me from the narrative and once I noticed that distraction it was hard to avoid. On, there are so many lives. How we wish we could live them concurrently instead of one by one by one. We could select the best pieces of each, stringing them together like a strand of pearls. But that's not how it works. A human life is a beautiful mess.” Liz, in white pajamas on a boat! The last thing she remembers vaguely was that she was meant to meet her friend, go shopping, have a meal? It’s also a love story, not soppy in any way, but all the same it follows the normal, predictable path of most love stories. However, this didn’t detract from my enjoyment at all. The fact it is a Young Adult Fiction book gave this story a degree of lightness. Even though the themes are quite serious and heavy it was an effortless read – but I did spend some considerable time thinking about the themes in this book after each sitting. I think I’ll do that for some days to come. People, you'll find, aren't usually all good or all bad. Sometimes they're a little bit good and a whole lot bad. And sometimes, they're mostly good with a dash of bad. And most of us, well, we fall in the middle somewhere.

Zevin's 2007 young adult book Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac was chosen for the ALA Best Books for Young Adults list. In 2010, she and Hans Canosa adapted it into a screenplay that became the Japanese movie Dareka ga Watashi ni Kiss wo Shita ( Someone Kissed Me), starring top teen idol actress Maki Horikita. [10] Other writing [ edit ] The concept and the world which Gabrielle Zevin's created is pretty unique and somewhat beautiful; it's what I like the most. Needless to say, Elsewhere focus on life (after death) and grief. The living (her family and friends) grieve her death while Liz grieves the life that has been taken from her. She has to learn to leave again in this new place and to appreciate her new life. However, I’m not a fan of the romance or do I just say love interest. It doesn’t work with me … a 28-year-old man (if I remember it correctly) fall in love with a 15-year-old girl. Not wanting to further disturb the sleeping girl, Liz tiptoes across the room toward the bureau. The telltale sign that she is, indeed, at sea comes from the furniture: it is bolted to the floor. While she does not find the room unpleasant, Liz thinks it feels lonely and sad, as if many people had passed through it but none had decided to stay.
