About this deal

The current trophy was created for the 1999 championships and is the first permanent prize in the tournament's history. [8] The trophy was designed and produced in London by a team of craftsmen from Garrard & Co (the Crown Jewellers). The whole process was completed over a period of two months time. It was inspired by the Nike of Samothrace statue, an incomplete yet iconic Greek statue from the Hellenistic era which is on display at Paris’ Louvre museum. Over the past four weeks, players from 32 nations dreamed of getting their hands on global football's most iconic piece of silverware and Argentina earned it when they survived a penalty shootout against France following a thrilling 3-3 draw. In 1970, following Brazil's then-record third tournament win which saw them claim the prize outright, the current version was commissioned.

Despite suggestions to the contrary, there are also no plans yet to give an original cup to a team that wins the tournament three times. It has been named the Jules Rimet Trophy in honour of FIFA’s third president, who pioneered the first World Cup. Following FIFA's decision to commission a new trophy ahead of the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, the story goes that they received 53 submissions for a new design. The good thing is they've upgraded the replica. That's a helluva lot better than the 1987 replica that was tiny and a bit average. This one is nice to have. Before the 2018 tournament, over 220,000 people across Russia and the world had the canoe to see the iconic trophy with their own eyes. I was fortunate to see it myself in 2018 while in Phuket, Thailand. In 2011, Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill told the Star-Times: "There's some debate as to which is the real World Cup. There are all sort of suggestions it's in someone's safe in Johannesburg from 1995." Among the new trophy winners, only England and Uruguay have failed to win the current trophy. Germany and Argentina are the most successful nations, having lifted the FIFA World Cup Trophy on three separate occasions. Two triumphs, 1974 and 1990, were credited to West Germany. West Germany was also the first country to lift the trophy in 1974. Following the retirement of the Jules Rimet Trophy, FIFA needed a new cup. The soccer’s governing body invited proposals and received submissions from fifty-three sculptors from seven different countries. Eventually, Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga’s design was selected by FIFA as their new World Cup trophy.

Since 1974, football world champions have been presented with the new version called the FIFA World Cup trophy. The original Jules Rimet Trophy was never recovered and it was claimed that it had been melted down into gold bars. So far, eight different nations have won the FIFA World Cup. Uruguay was the first nation to have won the Jules Rimet Trophy, or one can say a World Cup trophy of any kind. Overall, the Jules Rimet trophy has exchanged hands between five different nations.

What is the World Cup trophy made of and is it solid gold?

Made of 18-carat gold, the trophy is just under 37cm (14 inches) in height and weighs just over 6kg (13 pounds). It depicts two human figures holding a globe aloft. One such replica was also given to Nelson Mandela before South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2010. It was the only instance of an individual receiving an official replica of the trophy to date.

Sculptors from seven countries sent in 53 submissions for the new design but eventually, it was commissioned to Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga.

Following England’s success in 1966, the FA had a replica of the Jules Rimet Trophy made to use in exhibitions instead of the real one. However, the English Football Association was prohibited by FIFA from doing so. When the FA returned the original trophy in 1970, the replica was put away for years. Ottorino Barassi, an Italian who was serving as the FIFA vice-president at the time, quietly removed the trophy from the vault of a bank in Rome and hid it in a shoebox under his bed during the entirety of the War. FIFA has framed new rules regarding the guardianship of the trophy. Unlike the Jules Rimet Trophy, the winning nations and future winners don’t get to hold the original trophy anymore. Instead, they are given a gold-plated bronze replica provided by FIFA. West Germany was the first nation to lift the modern World Cup trophy in 1974. FIFA World Cup Trophy Facts

The current trophy was made by Thomas Lyte in 2014 as a perfect replica of the original trophy created in 1911. The "original" Webb Ellis Cup was not made for the Rugby World Cup. Its history dates to 1906 –well before appearing in New Zealand for the first time. Corbett eventually went on to hand the trophy over to the local police station and was detained for a while on suspicion that he might have been involved in the theft. He, however, had an alibi and got the clean chit. The new trophy can hold up to seventeen names and years, and it is likely to be retired following the 2038 World Cup. Unlike the Rimet Cup, which was passed from winning countries to the new winning nation, this one is FIFA’s permanent property. What Countries Have Won The Trophy The official line is that the World Cup trophy is solid, made up of 30,875 Carats of 18 karat (75%) gold with a band of malachite on its base.
