Vinegar and olive oil: Mix equal parts of white vinegar and olive oil in a bowl. Dip a clean microfibre cloth in the mixture and use it to apply it to the stain, rubbing gently in the direction of the wood grain. Let the cleaning solution sit for a few hours or overnight, then wipe it off. The stain should be lighter and less noticeable.

Next, find a white tea towel that is smooth in texture to prevent leaving a textured imprint in the wood. This is especially important on soft, varnished woods. The moisture can also react with the tannins in the wood, creating a chemical reaction that can result in a white or gray discoloration on the surface. While it did nothing on the ingrained dark water stain, I did have huge success in removing white water rings from some bedside tables and all it took was a gentle rub.
