I happen to have the last three things lying around at home or in my school workshop, so I didn't put links as to where I got them from - if you do happen to fund a good source for some, just put it in the comments and I'll add it in. As previously stated this option will produce more uniform colors, but multiple rounds can be done to combine different colors in the same flower. Secondly, I am assuming a variety of things, such as workshop ability. I am 17, have done a Design and Technology (Resistant Materials) GCSE (woo A*) for which I was awarded an engineering scholarship, spent many, many hours doing metal and woodwork both in and out of school and in general love working with my hands. It's therefore safe to say that what I may find simple (texturing, peening) may be a complex process to many of you, so I have tried to make this project as simple as possible, whilst still producing a satisfying end result that looks, and feels, professional. I have kept all the stages exactly the same as the first time I made one, so I haven't dumbed it down at all, but want to warn you - this is not something that can be done without commitment to the project. It really is worth it though.
Brazing rod/brass rod of a smaller diameter, around 4mm - this is for the workaround step. Brass is one of the few metals that's really soft enough to be cut without using a die (but more about that later). You can find this in most hardware/ironmongery type places, or online. Lay out the flowers as you plan to glue them in place. Mix the glue and get busy attaching the pieces together. Allow to dry for 24 hours before setting out in the garden. Cordless Drill/Drill Press/Dremel/Hand Drill - as long as it can take a 5mm (3/16" or thereabouts) drill bit, you're good. To clean up any oxidation from annealing, use a wire brush followed by sandpaper - wire wool also works well to get into all the nooks and crannies you've now made. Either burnish the steel/brass with sandpaper to get it to gleam, or leave it dull - both look nice, and complement/offset the rose. With delicate, ornate petals and long protruding stamens, this wonderful blossom will catch the eye. Its superb warm coppery tones are a delight. 20. First things first you want to thoroughly clean the copper with soap and water and try to avoid getting any fingerprints it. When heated an iridescent oxide layer will form on the copper. The specific result is dependent on temperature and exposure time. I produced the examples seen here using a torch, but more uniform color changes can also be achieved using an oven (see last picture). Use the scrap pieces of copper you saved to test/practice making the rainbow effect before trying on the real thing. Ounce you have have a color/pattern you're satisfied with let the copper cool down to room temperature. While hot the oxide layer isn't set yet and can be smudged or damaged. Ounce the templates have been traced drill out the center hole for the stem with a 1/4" drill bit. It will be easier to drill the hole while the copper sheet is still whole rather than after it has been cut into smaller pieces. USE CAUTION and stay safe. The copper will want to catch and spin when you get through it so make sure it's fully secure and wear gloves.
Ok, so you've gathered your equipment, and bought/salvaged your materials. Now, turn on some of your favourite music, grab a drink, and get to work on this first stage. Finally, curl the tops of your petals outwards to expose the texturing you worked on, and crinkle the edges - this step really makes a huge difference. This beautiful Butterfly Ranunculus makes you think of butterfly wings, hence its name. The blooms are light, with petals like parchment. Everything about this delightful bloom is delicate and ephemeral. They cannot help but make you feel dreamy. This plant has luscious shades of salmon, crimson, and berry.
