About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. You also get chapters from Jenna's perspective before her disappearance, and from Kate, the wife and business partner of Tom, who runs the retreats.

Tom Wade, the public face of SoulShrink is about to be released from prison after serving two years following tragedies at his last retreat in Gozo. I think it stems from the fact that any logical reader must suspend disbelief at an astronomical level. I did however finish it because I wanted to know what happened and whether I was right about the mystery (I was), and I did like the ending. Another twisty, chilling and unpredictable thriller, I inhaled Her Last Holiday, reading late into the night because I couldn’t put it down.

Present day: Kate is waiting for her husband, Tom Wade, a self-heal guru and the public face of SoulShrink, soon to walk out of the prison gates after serving two years following tragedies at his last retreat in Gozo. I bought this book the moment it became available on Kindle, and while still only 30% in, I then bought the hard back too. TAYLOR delivers an engaging, suspenseful, unpredictable, and slower paced mystery here that is told from three different perspectives and two timeframes.

The pace in the first half is good and a number of unsettling events occur, there’s a lot of suspicion in the Welsh retreat and a good puzzle to unlock. Jenna’s disappearance was ruled a suicide by the local police after some bloodstains and her flip flops were found at the top of a steep cliff. This one features a particularly unlikeable cast of characters, (not necessarily a bad thing but you do actually need one protagonist to care about) and confuses the reader further by having many of them change names.I really enjoyed Fran’s personality and familial hang-ups, but failed to connect with any of the other character’s. I didn't love the way the character arc ended with our main character Fran, but other than that, this was a really fun one! Fran’s sister Jenna disappeared two years ago on a wellness retreat in Gozo that went terribly wrong. I thought this was a successful use of a dual timeline, because I felt like even if the story had been told completely linearly, it still would have been a compelling thriller.
